Reggie “Pukey” McKnight is a middle-school nobody who isn’t sure he wants to be more than a nobody. After all, the last time he got a lot of attention in school, it was for throwing up in the lunchroom on the first day of the year after eating too much of his mom’s traditional Jamaican breakfast. At the same time, he’s restless and tired – tired of the same old stuff from the same old people, tired of being looked down on, and tired of having the only bright spot in his days be the time he spends writing stories for Night Man, the comic book hero he created.

When time for class elections roll around, it’s just one more “same old” – but is it? Guys like him who are “thisclose” to last pick for teams do not become president except on TV or in stupid movies. Guys like him wonder about it, though. Just a little. Being the president. The superstar. The hero. Maybe if Reggie took a chance, he’d be able to make a change in his school, his community, and most importantly, himself.

This debut novel for ages 10 and up has a dry sense of humor and a lot of heart.
