Orithian Haley doesn’t like his step-father Walt. And he certainly doesn’t want to change his name to Walt’s. But how can he tell him, especially since Rith’s mother never wants to talk about his real father?

Suddenly, strange things begin to happen in Rith’s house at night. First a spiral staircase replaces the regular stairs. The new stairs lead to a living room that isn’t his, a cat that isn’t his either, and a bizarre old man who speaks gibberish…

Or is it? Rith’s never been into religion, but he realises the words have a spiritual source – and an uncanny ring of truth. Is he just dreaming? As Rith tries to circle closer to the truth, the line between reality and unreality blurs…

Pat Schmatz conveys a boy’s search for the truth – about himself, his family, and God – in this honest and questioning novel.
